PCEC Medical Advisory Board

The Primary Care Education Consortium (PCEC) Medical Advisory Board is a working group of primary care clinicians who provide insight on the current educational needs and gaps facing primary care clinicians today.

The purpose of the PCEC Medical Advisory Board is to define educational gaps hindering the primary care clinician’s mastery of the therapeutic areas under their purview and to provide suggestions on methods to overcome these educational gaps in order to increase clinician effectiveness and improve patient care outcomes.

Penny Tenzer-IglesiasChair, Penny Tenzer-Iglesias, MD, FAAFP

Penny Tenzer, MD, is Associate Professor, Vice Chair, and Director of the Residency Program of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Additionally, she serves as Chief of Family Medicine Service for University of Miami Hospital, Director of Continuing Medical Education at the University of Miami School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and is an Attending Physician in the Department of Family Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

In June 2004, Dr. Tenzer was elected to the position of President Elect of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and assumed the presidency in June 2005. She recently completed her term as Immediate Past President. She served on the AAFP Leadership Working Party Group as well as the AFMO Legislative Committee. Presently, she is AFMRD’s liaison to CAS (Council of Academic Societies) of the AAMC. A prolific author of articles and book chapters on topics that include pain relief, smoking cessation, and post-traumatic stress disorder, Dr. Tenzer’s work has been published in a variety of professional journals. In addition to her contributions as an author, Dr. Tenzer has been awarded several grants by educational institutions. These grants allow Dr. Tenzer to continue studies as principal investigator or co-investigator on topics inclusive of major depressive disorder, HIV/AIDS, Health Disparities, and Cultural Competency.

Dr. Tenzer lectures regularly at the national level on a variety of topics including ADHD, dyslipidemia, geriatrics, pain management, RLS, diabetes, and women’s health issues. She has been published in several journals including the Clinics of North America Series, Annals of Family Medicine ,The Journal of Family Practice, Geriatrics, Home Health Care Consultant, the Journal of Social Science & Medicine and Lipid Links: A Reporter for Primary Care, and she is a contributing author for Varicella Immunization: Recommendations for Primary Care Clinicians Consensus Guideline from an Expert Panel, and a variety of Restless Leg Syndrome, Diabetes, and Pain Management articles.

A consummate teacher, Dr. Tenzer was named the American Academy of Family Physicians: 2003 Full Time Exemplary Teacher of the Year and received the 2003 Exemplary Educator Award from the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. She was an award finalist for the ACGME’s Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” award. She has received the Golden Apple Teaching Award twice and is also a recipient of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians “President’s Award.” She is listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America database and the 2006 “Guide to America’s Top Doctors”.  The Florida Monthly Magazine June 2004, named Dr. Tenzer one of Florida’s Best Doctors and she was named in Best Doctors in America for 2005. In 2001, Miami Metro Magazine recognized her as one of “Miami Dade’s Most Influential Females.”


Bob AddletonBob Addleton, EdD

Robert L. (Bob) Addleton, EdD is Executive Vice President of the Physicians’ Institute for Excellence in Medicine, a 501c3 subsidiary of the Medical Association of Georgia. Previously, he was Director of Education for the Medical Association of Georgia from 1998 to 2007. Prior to joining MAG, he was an organizational development consultant with the Einstein Consulting Group, and his own firm, Piedmont Consulting. He is a certified Six Sigma Green Belt (Emory University). He holds a doctorate from the University of Alabama (Educational Leadership), an Educational Specialist degree (Counselor Education) from Appalachian State University, a Master’s in Education (Rehabilitation Counseling) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia.
    
Bob is active in professional continuing medical education associations. He is a Certified Continuing Medical Education Professional (CCMEP), he serves as a Board Member of the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education (ACME), the National Task Force for CME Provider/Industry Relations, and is a Distinguished Member of the ACME. He is a frequent speaker at CME events, including ACME conferences, the National Task Force, the MedEd Forum, and at state medical societies.



 M. Elayne DeSimone, RN, PhD, NPc, RPA

Dr. DeSimone is a clinical  professor in the adult and family nurse practitioner programs at the Stony Brook University in N.Y. She also works as an adult nurse practitioner in a free primary care clinic for the uninsured in West Chester, P.A.  In practice since 1974, her clinical experience has taken her from critical care to research to primary care. Her clinical expertise is in the care of patients with osteoporosis. She co-founded the Nurse Practitioner Association of Long Island and is a past president of the New York State Coalition of Nurse Practitioners. Political activism and advocacy for nurses have always remained a passion.

In 2007, Dr. DeSimone was elected as the President-Elect of the American College of Clinicians, an advocacy organization whose mission is to foster patient access to high quality health care from nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Board certified in Adult Health, Dr. DeSimone is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. DeSimone was elected to the Center's board of directors in June 2007.


Fred EckelFred M. Eckel, MS, DSc.

Fred Eckel is Executive Director, North Carolina Association of Pharmacists and Professor of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Fred grew up in Philadelphia where he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, now known as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.  It was at The Ohio State University School of Pharmacy and Hospitals he earned his M.S. Degree and Residency in Hospital Pharmacy. Fred is a pharmacist by choice, commitment and concern. He has worked in community and hospital pharmacy. He served as Director of Pharmacy at the UNC Hospitals from 1968 to 1975. Fred is a past president of ASHP, NCSHP, and the North Carolina Center for Pharmaceutical Care for which he currently serves as Executive Director. Fred is Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy Times and has contributed over 250 articles and editorials to the pharmacy literature. He is a frequent speaker at pharmacy meetings, having spoken in all 50 states and on 5 continents.

Fred’s wife, Peggy, is a nurse; his daughter, Sarah, and son, Stephen, practice pharmacy.  Fred’s faith is important to him. He continues to teach a Sunday School class each week and serves as Executive Director of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International.  Being Grandpop to his five grandchildren has given new meaning to his life.

Fred is considered a pharmacy futurist. You may not agree with him, but he will make you think. Be prepared to be challenged, stimulated, and quickened.


Shari R. Fine, DO, FACOFP 

Dr. Fine is Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey,  as well as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York.  She is also Director of Medical Education and the Family Practice Residency Program at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ.   

Dr. Fine received her DO  degree in 1985 from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a residency in Family Practice at Delaware Valley Medical Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in Faculty Development for Urban Family Medicine at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York City. Dr. Fine is a member of the American College of Family Physicians in Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, American Osteopathic Association, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.


 

Wendy M. Macey, MPAS, PA-C

Ms. Macey is active in all aspects of family medicine. She enjoys the full spectrum of primary care. She has been in practice at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics for the last 8 years. She enjoys her partnership with physicians, PAs, NPs, students of all varieties and administrative professionals. She is a clinical associate of the University of Utah PA program and with the College of Nursing.


She enjoys her role as a PA, teacher, and CME educator/public speaker.  Her areas of interest include women’s health, adolescent health, sexual medicine, psychiatry in primary care and surgical procedures for primary care.

When not in clinic, Wendy can be found outside doing just about anything! Travel, adventure, trying new things are all on the agenda. Her greatest loves are her two daughters.  Her theme for 2009 is simple: Open your heart, Open your mind, Believe and see what can happen!

Goutham Rao, MD

Goutham Rao, MD is the Clinical Director of the Weight Management and Wellness Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (of UPMC) and Associate Professor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he has directed and taught a mandatory course in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics since 2001. Dr. Rao is a family physician by training who has practiced in diverse underserved areas from rural Ontario to urban Pittsburgh. He maintains an active family medicine practice as well as a large practice devoted to caring for overweight and obese children. He is also a health services researcher who is investigating optimal ways to identify, evaluate and manage obesity and obesity-related illnesses among children in busy primary care settings. Dr. Rao is the author of roughly fifty publications including three books. Most recently, Rational Medical Decision Making: A Case - Based Approach (New York: McGraw-Hill) was published in 2007. Dr. Rao also serves on a number of national committees including the American Heart Association (AHA) Obesity Committee. He was also a member of the American Medical Association's (AMA) Expert Committee on the Identification, Assessment, and Management of Child and Adolescent Overweight and Obesity.

Dr. Rao is a native of Halifax, NS, Canada. He completed both his undergraduate and medical degrees at McGill University in Montreal and residency training at the University of Toronto. He completed a faculty development fellowship at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1997.

 


Elmer L. Washington Jr., MD

Elmer Washington graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, and he completed his residency in family medicine at the Georgetown / Providence Family Medicine Residency Program in Washington, D.C.  In addition, he received an MPH from Northwestern Medical School, and he has received additional graduate training in medical informatics at Oregon Health and Science University.

Dr. Washington is a medical director at ActiveHealth Management where he provides clinical support for disease management, contributes to clinical content development for the company’s proprietary decision support system, and performs utilization management functions.  Before joining ActiveHealth, Dr. Washington engaged in clinical practice for a number of years.  He has held a number of leadership positions in ambulatory and hospital settings.  Areas of responsibilities in these settings have included quality improvement, accreditation, and strategic planning.  He is a 6 sigma black belt.  In addition, he has served as a board member for the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, and he has participated as CME faculty in the development and delivery of a number of CME programs for the academy.
